Samata Sarana

The most noteworthy policy of this institution is to help the poor and the needy irrespective of nationality, race or religion.

The motto of Samata Sarana, “Help to all,” reflects their mission to reach out to those in need, aiming to enhance the quality of life for residents of the slums and shanties in Colombo North. For 35 years, Samata Sarana has been supporting impoverished children and elderly individuals, regardless of race or religion, ensuring that no one is turned away. This remarkable organization operates from a beautiful building constructed on a former garbage dump, a testament to their commitment to transformation and renewal. In the socially deprived area of Mutwal, Colombo North, where there is a large marginalized Tamil community, Samata Sarana has become a beacon of hope.

Led by Director Tony Anandappa, Samata Sarana serves a diverse community, with many Tamil children and teachers, alongside Sinhala Buddhists and Muslims who have been part of the organization for years. During our visit to Samata Sarana in Mutwal, Colombo 15, we spoke with Fr. Leo Perera, the former Executive Director, who shared the incredible work being done. The center provides meals and care for 160 children and 60 elderly adults five days a week, even arranging transport to and from their homes. To say that Samata Sarana serves the poor and marginalized is an understatement—they are truly transforming lives.
