Summer of 2024

Given the horrendous recent racial violence in England, it is important that vulnerable members of the Sri Lankan and the wider ethnic communities are supported.

We recall the events in Southall on 23 April 1979 when Blair Peach was murdered and the riots that occurred in 2011.

Britain in 2024 seems is no different a place to 1979 and 2011, in terms of social inequality, social cohesion and poverty.

The riots have erupted in working class communities with high levels of social depravation, exposing these issues.
One of the earliest targets was Chanaka Balasuriya. A 48-year-old owner of a shop in Southport. The wider attack was on refugees and other immigrants.

As a Charity we are sadly not strangers to Sri Lanka’s history of racial violence, and the need to condemn the same, and support all communities and the vulnerable.

In making this statement the Tsunami Charity takes a principled position to:
1. Send a message of support for Chanaka Balasuriya.
2. Express our solidarity to refugees, immigrants and vulnerable members of the wider community as a whole.
3. Offer our services to assist those organisations that promote racial inclusion, where possible, individually and or collectively as a Charity.
